Airway Heights residents learn more about potential PFAS in private wells

Three ground water wells at the airport were found to be contaminated in 2017, but the department of ecology wasn't notified about the problem until this year.

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. — People in Airway Heights learned how they can help investigators looking into ground water contamination at the Spokane Airport, which some speculate has spread to private wells. The Department of Ecology says an investigation is underway to see what has been contaminated already.

PFAS chemicals, which are used in firefighting foam, can increase cancer risk and cause other health issues.

Three ground water wells at the airport were found to be contaminated in 2017, but the department of ecology wasn't notified about the problem until this year.

The airport is now responsible for cleaning up the site.

An investigation is determining how far the contamination has spread. The public will have a chance to weigh in on the airport's plan to clean up the site.
