$30,000 in golf merchandise stolen from The Plains Golf Course in Cheney

Someone stole new putters and clubs, retailing up to $30,000 dollars, from The Plains Golf Course in Cheney after smashing into the building with a rock.

CHENEY, Wash — The Plains Golf Course, a nine-hole golf course in Cheney, had $30,000 dollars worth of golf merchandise stolen over the weekend.

Employees at the course claim brand new clubs and putters from brands like Cobra, TaylorMade, Callaway and Odyssey were stolen after someone got inside by smashing the building’s glass door with a rock.

Police say the incident occurred sometime between closed hours between Friday night and Saturday morning.

This golf course is in a quiet area of Cheney, off of I-90’s 272 Medical Lake Exit. Golfers here say most people do not know about the course, as it is in a hidden area. The manager said this theft had to be strategically planned.

“You’re out of town this far, so hopefully a perk of that would be feeling [a] little more secluded and safe," Dakota White, the course's general said. "So, having a bigger deal like this makes people uncomfortable a bit.”

The Plains Golf Course said they have filed police reports before over smaller, petty theft that they have experienced since 2020, but this was the first time they experienced a larger loss.

“Gas was stolen for a while," White said. "A guy was coming back over and over again and we figured out eventually that he drilled a hole into the gas tank and put a hose into it."

White and other employees suspect the merchandise is being resold on ‘used’ club sites.

"How do you offload major inventory like that without major red flags?" White asked.

The General Manager told KREM 2 he talked to his merchandise vendors, who claim they have seen an increase in stolen merchandise across Washington, Idaho and Montana.

He also says it has taken the community by surprise that crime is occurring in this area, especially as there is active construction across the street for the brand-new Camas Meadow Community Park.
