SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) crews responded to a reported drowning near the Coyote Rock area of the Spokane River.
According to SVFD, they responded around 6 p.m. on Saturday.
As of Sunday, the Spokane County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) confirmed one person is dead and two others are still hospitalized.
SVFD said the person who called in the incident on Saturday told 911 that someone was unconscious on a rock in the middle of the river and a bystander was performing CPR.
SVFD, along with crews from Spokane County Fire Department 9, Spokane Valley Police Department, Spokane Fire Department and American Medical Response, arrived on the scene to discover four people requiring assistance.
Three people were taken to shore by paddle board. The unconscious individual was loaded onto an SVFD power boat and also taken to shore. Officials said all four were transported to the hospital by ambulance, where the unconscious person was pronounced dead.
SVFD reminds people the water is still extremely cold and that potential dangers below the surface cannot always be seen. They also remind those enjoying the river to always wear a life jacket.
