Community concerns addressed | West Plains offers free PFAS testing for 300 wells

The community has raised concerns about chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances contaminating the drinking water.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Starting in March, drinking water sampling for chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) will be available to the northeast West Plains area, according to the West Plains.

There will be around 300 private and shared wells sampled and there will be no cost to the area's residents.

According to the West Plains release, the testing comes in response to the community's concerns about their drinking water being contaminated with PFAS.

“PFAS compounds are found in firefighting foam and other sources,” the release said.

A team is working to ensure clean drinking water by sampling the drinking water and studying the groundwater quality.

“The goal is to better understand the extent and severity of PFAS contamination beyond the boundaries currently being addressed in sampling conducted by Fairchild Air Force Base,” the release said.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is funding the sampling. To request a test, follow this link
