SPOKANE, Wash. — Based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s(CDC) most recent data, Innerbody Research’s 7th annual study shows Spokane ranks in the Top 100 U.S. cities with the highest sexually transmitted disease (STD) rates.

Spokane ranks 81st on that list. Other Northwest cities like Boise, Seattle and Portland also made this list.

The rankings are based on STD cases per 100,000 people in the population.

Spokane has 655 cases per 100,000 people.

Portland, Ore. has 1,244 cases..

Seattle, Wash. has 738 cases.

Boise, Idaho has 545 cases.

Top 5:

  1. Philadelphia, Pa.  with 1,504 cases

  2. Memphis, Tenn. with 1,498 cases

  3. Jackson, Miss. with 1,490 cases

  4. New Orleans, La. with 1,450 cases

  5. St. Louis, Mo. with 1,423 cases

According to Innerbody Research, this is the first “post-lockdown” STD data that the CDC has given to the public since the COVID-19 pandemic.

"When the CDC examined data from 2020 a couple of years ago, it had been significantly impacted by socially disruptive lockdowns,” said Tim Barclay, PhD. “And yet, nonetheless, infection rates rose year over year. In other words, we were not socializing more, yet we were spreading STDs at higher rates.

Barclay says these findings emphasize the importance of public health to the prevention of the spread of STDs.
