SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — A second case of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) has been confirmed in Spokane County.

According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), CWD was found in an adult male white-tailed deer which was harvested by a hunter during the opening weekend of deer hunting season.

WDFW said the deer harvested was close to the first case of confirmed CWD, which was found this summer near Fairwood.

WDFW said lymph nodes from the deer were submitted to the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at WSU for testing on October 16. WDFW was notified of the positive result this week.

In late July, WDFW enacted several emergency rules to help prevent the spread of the disease

Most of the requirements are in three game management units near the detection site: 124 Mount Spokane, 127 Mica Peak, and 130 Cheney.

Hunters and salvagers in those areas will be required to send in samples of any deer, elk or moose.
