GRANT COUNTY, Wash. — Grant County Health District (GCHD) warns folks that Diamond Shruumz has been causing serious health problems for people across the nation. The brand is currently a part of a nationwide investigation by the CDC and FDA due to multiple reports of illness and unfortunate reactions, according to GCHD.
In June of this year, Diamond Shruumz recalled all of their products, however, GCHD staff said that they discovered that these products were still being sold as of recently and may still be present in the community. The discovered products were removed from sale.
According to GCHD, the FDA is currently testing Diamond Shruumz products and it has been suspected that Muscimol or Ibotenic Acid, a chemical found in the genus Amanita mushroom, could be the cause of the multiple reported illnesses.
Here are the statistics of the reported illnesses as of July 8, 2024, according to GCHD:
- 58 illnesses have been reported in 27 states.
- 50 out of the 58 people have reported seeking medical attention.
- 30 people have been hospitalized.
- One potentially associated death is under investigation concerning the products.
Any products containing psychoactive compounds such as mushroom extracts or cannabis are often sold as chocolate, gummy candies, or other variations of snack foods. According to the GCHD, these "edibles" might contain undisclosed ingredients such as illicit substances, potentially harmful contaminants that are not approved for use in food, and other adulterants.
The GCHD urges everyone to not buy, sell, or serve Diamond Shruumz brand cones, chocolate bars, or gummies. Discard and destroy any products that have been purchased to avoid the chances of obtaining a serious illness.
Seek immediate medical attention if you have consumed their products and have the following symptoms:
- Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
- Hallucinations
- Uncontrolled movements
- Fast or slow heart rate
- High or low blood pressure
- Coughing
- Choking
- Excessive sweating or secretions
- Flushed skin
The GCHD said that there are severe effects have been reported such as seizures, decreased level of consciousness, and respiratory failure.
Diamond Shruumz consists of selling a variety of products such as chocolate bars, cones, and gummies that are marketed as containing a proprietary blend of mushrooms.
Consumers are also encouraged by the FDA to report adverse events related to these products to FDA MedWatch.
