SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane teacher is hosting an online meeting for students to still have recess between classes.
After Washington Governor Jay Inslee announced the closure of all schools across Washington State, teachers started teaching online classes.
Tiffiny Santos, a third grade teacher at Westview Elementary, said she wanted to get creative with how she kept her students engaged.
“How about we do a virtual recess like two or three times a week,” Santos said.
Her son owns Gas House Gym in Spokane Valley. After he had to close the facility, he started doing online classes for his clients.
“That’s where I got the idea,” Santos said. “When we go to recess at school, it’s the happiest. You hear laughing and all this movement on the playground. That’s a huge part of what they’re missing.”
Santos’s 30 minute classes feature a fitness instructor directing students through a stream of push ups, sit ups, jumping jacks and interactive games.
They were initially intended for her students, but other parents wanted to get their children involved, Santos said.
“So no, we’re not meeting in person, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still be active and let off some energy,” she said.
Parents who want their kids to join the class can send a message to Gas House Gym on Facebook to receive a link to the Zoom online meeting.
