PROVO, Utah — Health officials told Brigham Young University that a person with coronavirus attended a game against Gonzaga University in Utah last month.
The Zags took on BYU at the Marriot Center in Provo on Feb. 22. The Cougars upset the Bulldogs 91-78 during that game.
The Utah County Department of Health told BYU that the person had mild symptoms during the game on Feb. 22 and the risk of transmission to others at the game is “low.” Health department officials told BYU they are contacting people who sat within six feet of the patient to notify them about possible exposure.
A spokesperson for the health department could not confirm on Monday where the people who sat near the patient were from, adding that an epidemiologist worked closely with BYU to contact ticket holders.
Utah Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox said the person is from Davis County, Utah, adding that every person who had contact with the patient has been contacted.
Individuals who have not been contacted are not considered to be at risk by health officials and do not need to take further actions.
State and county health officials added that there is no ongoing risk with the Marriott Center at BYU and all high-touch surfaces are regularly disinfected. BYU said on Twitter that closing the facility is not necessary at this time.
At least 22 people have died and a total of 169 others have tested positive for coronavirus in Washington state. Washington state has the most reported cases in the U.S.
