Gonzaga vice president, ministry leader resign suddenly

An email said Vice President Rev. Case also resigned from his position as the Men's Basketball Chaplain. Rev. Pat Lee, S.J., Vice President for Mission and Ministry, also resigned from his position leading the Mission and Ministry division.

Dr. Thayne M. McCulloch, president of Gonzaga University, emailed students and staff Friday to announced he accepted Rev. Frank Case, S.J.'s resignation from his position of University Vice President.

KREM obtained the email, which said Rev. Case also resigned from his position as the Men's Basketball Chaplain. Rev. Pat Lee, S.J., Vice President for Mission and Ministry, also resigned from his position leading the Mission and Ministry division.

Michelle Wheatley, who has been serving as acting vice president for Mission and Ministry since Aug. 1st has agreed to continue in Lee's role, the email said.

Case was not on the sideline this Tuesday for the men's basketball game, according to KREM sports director Brenna Greene.

The resignations come on the heels of an investigation that found Jesuit priests accused of sexual abuse and misconduct retired on Gonzaga University's campus.

The Catholic Diocese of Spokane sent an updated press release related to retired Jesuit priests credibly accused of sexual abuse living in the Cardinal Bea House on Gonzaga's Campus Friday. That release says In June 2011, then Jesuit Provincial, Father Patrick Lee, informed, in writing,then-Bishop Blase Cupich that seven priests with safety plans in place were living at Bea House.

Those credibly accused priests living on campus had safety plans requiring such things as chaperones for any trips outside of Cardinal Bea House and restrictions on their public ministry, according to the release.

KREM reached out to Gonzaga for comment. The university has not yet responded.
