126 apartments, 26 condos, two towers, and $60 million.
That's the planned Falls Tower development overlooking the Spokane Falls. But the plans briefly came to a halt.
The old YWCA Building complex currently exists on the site. City of Spokane planning records suggest it was built about 1965. Project developers submitted a demolition permit application in November this year.
Before the permit is approved, the building must be reviewed by the Spokane Historic Landmarks Commission. Last week, the commission found the building is eligible for listing as a historic place. But it decided to allow the demolition, only with a few conditions.
Before the building can be demolished, the developer must complete a list of tasks archiving the building's history. Those include detailed interior and exterior photographs of the building, and salvage any important historic items.
They must also provide $2,500 to the Historic Preservation Office for research and to write a detailed history of the YWCA's time in the building. The commission also wants to work with the developers on future interpretive signage highlighting the building's history during construction.
Once these conditions are met, developers will submit their demolition plans to the city. With this final approval they can begin to tear down the old YWCA building. That timeline is still to be determined.
