SPOKANE, Wash.--Police patrolled outside Hutton Elementary School Monday due to a deadly shooting nearby on Sunday night.

School officials had extra security on hand on Monday during school hours. Police blocked off an area right across from the school to protect some possible evidence.

School staff wanted to make sure the school day was as normal as possible for students.

The school started at its normal time at 9:00 a.m. on Monday. The school district's community relations director said a few more parents opted to drive their students to school rather than letting them walk to school.

Staff held a special meeting before school to make sure everyone was on the same page.

Teachers greeted children and parents as they arrived to school. Parents said they felt comfortable.

'Well actually it was very calm this morning. We heard the news this morning at breakfast so we expected a lot of activity and we were surprised that it was very quiet,' said father Eric Phillips.

'Felt pretty good about the police presence and brought my kids in and, so not too worried,' said father Rick Roddis.

'Well, we were comfortable based on some of the news reports that we were able to read that there would be an increased police presence in the neighborhood so that was good enough for us,' added father Deane Osterman.

The district resource officer was inside the school for the day. The school decided to hold recess indoors on Monday.

Starting on Monday, school was set to get out at 1:00 p.m. all week due to conferences.
