'Without us, the work doesn’t get done.' | Majority of WSU student employees authorize strike

Student employees under the WSU Coalition of Academic Student Employees Union voted to strike after little progress was made with WSU admin on employees' demands.

PULLMAN, Wash. — The majority of Washington State University (WSU) academic student employees voted in favor of striking on campus.

Student employees under the WSU Coalition of Academic Student Employees Union (CASE) voted to strike after little progress was made with WSU admin on employees' demands. Some of the demands include livable wages, adequate health insurance, protections against harassment and discrimination and a fair workload.

“I love the work I do, and I am passionate about my research, but passion does not keep me safe and certainly does not pay the bills," said Nas Cardwell, a Research Assistant in Chemical Engineering on the Pullman campus. "We are prepared to show WSU Admin that without us, the work doesn’t get done.”

Student employees under CASE claim the WSU administration was hostile during negotiations and failed to meet the demands from employees. WSU-CASE employees also filed a complaint over WSU administration's "bad faith bargaining" while the two sides discussed health insurance.

The Washington State Public Employment Relations Commission (PERC) is now investigating the claim.

WSU-CASE has not set a specific strike date. Dates will be announced once the unions decide it is necessary to strike.
