West Valley School District students open schools for tour in a push to approve bond

West Valley City School is open on Wednesday, Nov. 15 for community members to tour.

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — The West Valley School District (WVSD) is giving people a firsthand look to help pass a bond in support of student success.

The community is invited to walk through the halls of the West Valley City School on Wednesday, Nov. 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. The 'See our Schools' series is part of the district's move to help pass a new bond that could help renovate schools in the area as growth continues in our region.

Some students in WVSD said they're feeling the squeeze of having a lot of kids and not a lot of space. If the bond passes, it's one of the things the West Valley School District hopes to improve with funding from the bond.

"This building is really old, it hasn't been renovated since the 1980s," said West Valley High School Junior Derek Maney. "It's got really long corridors that funnel together which is a safety concern, classrooms are old... so this new building will serve to upgrade the facilities,"

Derek Maney is one of the nearly 3,500 students in the district. Walking through Centennial Middle School, he said the school's space concerns go beyond the campus.

"The football team here actually utilizes the locker rooms of the swimming pool across the way so they don't even use the locker rooms over here because of how small and crammed the spaces are so these upgraded facilities will also help our football team," Maney said.

The district hopes to use bond funding to add more classrooms to elementary schools.  WVSD also wants to bring the city middle school and Spokane Valley High School to a shared campus and make other district improvements to security and parking.

"This bond is going to help all of our students what starts here in the middle school will come to the high school eventually," Maney said. "It'll come full circle."

Some students said that there is a need for improvements, but a smaller space brings them closer to the things they appreciate.

"We always wish it could be improved, but we've all definitely made some great memories, we've all grown and learned," one Centennial student shared.

Special election day is Feb. 13. The bond needs a 60% majority from voters to pass.
