Local school districts offering holiday food resources for students

Distribution dates are Wednesdays for Spokane Public Schools elementary schools and every other Tuesday at middle and high schools.

SPOKANE, Wash. — With Christmas less than a week away, many schools in the Inland Northwest will go on winter break soon. Before that, local school districts are reminding students that resources will still be available if needed.

Bite2Go is one of the resources offered that is having a major impact in schools all around the Inland Northwest. The group works with Second Harvest to send food home with students that are dealing with food insecurity.

On a yearly basis, they send out roughly 300,000 food kits to schools in Eastern and Central Washington as well as North Idaho.

Distribution dates are Wednesdays for Spokane Public Schools elementary schools and every other Tuesday at middle and high schools. Wednesday, December 20 will be the last distribution date before the break. It will be a double kit distribution to help families get through the break.

Nicole Jenkins-Rosenkrantz, SPS Director of Community Relations & Diversity Training said, “What I really appreciate is that it really takes our whole community to care for our families and being able to see the community wrap our arms around the children is very hearting.”

When school isn’t in session, families can enter their zip code on the Second Harvest website to find nearby food pantries and meal sites.

Another resource offered is the SPS Heart Program. The district did a gift card drive for students who are unaccompanied and potentially facing homelessness.

You can find more resources on the SPS website if you or any student you know is need as the winter break approaches.
