CHENEY, Wash. — The Cheney Education Association (CEA) approved their new contract with Cheney Public Schools (CPS) on Monday after reaching a tentative agreement, officially avoiding a potential strike.
The tentative agreement announcement was made by CEA and CPS late Friday night.
The CEA met on Monday, August 26, where members heard details of the tentative agreement and had a ratification vote. CEA members approved the new contract with 94% approval.
Cheney School District approved contract lists an 18% salary increase over the next three years to their educators. This includes a 7.2% increase in the first year, a 5% increase in the second year and a 5.8% increase in the third year.
The tentative agreement now goes to the Cheney school board, who will also have to approve the new contract for the agreement to be final.
The CEA and CPS released the following joint statement in an email sent to CPS families, staff and community members:
"The Cheney Education Association (CEA) and the Cheney School District are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement that reflects our shared commitment to the success and well-being of our students, staff, and the entire school community. Both teams have worked tirelessly to reach a tentative agreement that honors the needs of the parties involved, ensuring that we are well-prepared to continue providing a high-quality education in a safe and caring environment. As we approach the start of the new school year, we are excited to move forward together. Our collective focus remains on creating a positive, supportive atmosphere in which all students can learn at high levels and graduate with options for post-secondary education, careers, and civic engagement. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this process. We look forward to welcoming students back to our school buildings and working together to achieve a successful year ahead."
The CEA said it would strike if a deal was not ratified by Monday, August 26.
