University of Idaho dean commends organizers of vigil for students killed one year ago

The ceremony, set to begin at 6 p.m. on Monday, will include candle lighting, a moment of silence and student speakers. The vigil is open to the public.

MOSCOW, Idaho — University of Idaho students will hold a vigil to honor the lives and memories of Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen on Monday, Nov. 13, one year after their tragic deaths.

The vigil will begin at 6 p.m., on the Administration Lawn on the University of Idaho campus. The event will focus on honoring and remembering the lives of the four classmates they lost last November.

Representatives from three University of Idaho Greek chapters led the effort to organize the vigil. The ceremony will feature a candle lighting, a moment of silence and student speakers. The vigil is open to anyone who wishes to attend.

"I'm really proud of their efforts and what they're going to be doing because I think they are going to show that while we are moving forward, we're not moving past.," said  Dr. Blaine Eckles, the University of Idaho Dean of Students. "We are bringing those individuals with us. They'll also be conveying thoughts of love and care and support for the families that are still navigating this and will be for the rest of their lives. So I'm just really proud of our student-run initiative. They're going to do fantastic and I will definitely be there in support of them."

Any off-campus students, faculty, alumni and staff are asked to turn on their porch lights from 6-7 p.m. to honor the students.

Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen were tragically stabbed and killed in an off-campus home on the early morning of Nov. 13, 2022. Nearly two months later, Moscow police arrested the suspect, 28-year-old Bryan Kohberger, at his family's home in Pennsylvania. He was extradited back to Idaho and booked into Latah County Jail in early January, where he has been since.

The murders shocked the Moscow community, as well as the nation. Since that tragic day one year ago, the University of Idaho, the city of Moscow and the victims' friends and families have made sure the students will not be forgotten.
