SPS reviews weapons policy with parents after student brings gun to Rogers High School

According to Principal John Hammil, staff were made aware of the situation at the end of the school day Thursday. No one was injured.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Local law enforcement are conducting an investigation after a student was found to be in possession of a gun at John R. Rogers High School Thursday.

According to an email sent to parents by principal John Hammil, staff were made aware of the situation at the end of the school day. Campus safety immediately confronted the student and took the weapon away. Nobody was injured.

"Safety is our top priority, and we will notify families whenever there is a safety concern or threat at their child’s school," Hammil said in the email.

In response to the incident, Spokane Public Schools (SPS) sent parents documents outlining their policy on handling weapons at school and disciplinary action.

SPS said any student found with a weapon on school grounds will be expelled for at least one year. The only people allowed on campus with firearms are military members or any federal, state or local law enforcement officers.
