Man arrested following SWAT standoff in northeast Spokane

Police said they had a suspect surrounded in a home on East Frederick Avenue.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Police Department arrested a man following a SWAT standoff in northeast Spokane Tuesday night.

According to SPD, officers responded to a drive-by shooting in the Hillyard neighborhood near North Crestline Street off East Queen Avenue Tuesday afternoon. SPD said a man reportedly fired a shotgun at someone else before leaving the area.

Police said the woman who was shot at ducked the gunshot before the suspect drove away. 

SPD said a nearby home was hit by the gunshot, finding damage inside the home. No one was hurt.

SPD said the investigation led to officers finding a suspect at a home on East Frederick Avenue off North Havana Street near Minnehaha Park. SPD said they, the SWAT team and law enforcement had the home surrounded.

Police said they obtained a search warrant and are using other equipment to search around the property.

SPD spent several hours outside the home before the suspect was taken into custody just before 1 a.m.

SPD said 58-year-old Randall S. Bushell was arrested and booked into the Spokane County Jail for the following charges:

  • Five counts of first-degree assault
  • Drive-by shooting
  • Second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm

SPD said Bushell has extensive criminal history with a prior felony conviction of possession of a controlled substance.

Bushell has been placed on a $300,000 bond.
