SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Police Department (SPD) arrested a man who it says carjacked a woman's car and fled from police on Sunday.
According to SPD, police responded to reports of a carjacking at Corbin Park (2900 block of N West Oval St.) at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 25. Police say a woman reported that a man got into her car after she stepped out and took off, dragging her while she was holding onto the car.
The woman told police she did not know the man and her dog was still in the car.
SPD said police found the car near East Empire Avenue and North Regal Street. SPD said the car drove away from police, and SPD said the car was going very fast through city streets.
SPD said during the pursuit, the man who carjacked the car hit a patrol vehicle and kept fleeing, also hitting several traffic cones as he drove through a construction zone and hit two parked cars.
SPD said officers eventually conducted a PIT maneuver and stopped the car, but the man got out of the car and started to run away. Officers eventually arrested the man.
SPD arrested 24-year-old Austin Hayes and booked him into the Spokane County Jail, developing probable cause to charge Hayes with first-degree robbery carjacking, second-degree assault- intention to commit felony, attempting to elude a police vehicle, third-degree assault, resisting arrest, obstructing a law enforcement officer, operating a vehicle with license suspended and two counts of hit-and-run unattended vehicle.
A judge set Hayes' bond at $100,000. SPD said Hayes has 17 prior convictions, with his most recent felony conviction being second-degree possession of stolen property and eluding.
