SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane accountant has been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing over $715,000 from her former employer.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Washington, between May 2020 and March 2023, Carol Dacaymat Casilla used her position as an accountant for Spokane Dermatology Clinic to issue company checks to herself and deposit them to her personal accounts. The attorney's office also found that Casilla made electronic funds transfers with company funds toward her personal credit cards.
In total, the attorney's office said Casilla stole $715,255.09.
Following Casilla's two-year prison sentence, she will be placed on three years of supervised release, along with restitution to the victims.
“Ms. Casilla betrayed her employer’s trust and stole hundreds of thousands of dollars,” United States Attorney Vanessa Waldref said. “Accountants and financial professionals like Ms. Casilla are given a significant amount of control over a company’s finances. This sentence should send a message that those who abuse their positions of trust to enrich themselves will be held accountable. I want to especially commend the stellar investigative work in this case done by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Spokane Resident Agency. We will continue working with our law enforcement partners to hold accountable those who commit fraud and financial crimes.”
