SPOKANE, Wash — A female student was arrested at Shadle Park High School after she allegedly stabbed a student in a school bathroom.
Spokane police said a female student was arrested and charged with first-degree assault following some type of brawl on Thursday morning. Two students were injured in the incident, one stabbed and the other in a fight leading up to the stabbing. Four students total were involved in the altercation.
The student that was stabbed was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. The other student who was injured did not go to the hospital.
“Every time we have an incident like this, we always kind of come back, debrief and see how we can do better. I think we've done better as time has gone on," said Sandra Jarrad, the communications manager for SPS. "Our message is that we've increased our campus safety, there specialists across the district, that's number one. Number two is that we are building a culture of safety in all of our schools. So safety is everybody's responsibility.”
Shadle Park students were shocked to hear about the alleged stabbing.
"When I was walking in, there was a girl in handcuffs in front of the school," said Jasmine Rose Perkins, a 12th grader. " [I was] really shocked, because it's just like, you go to school and then you get stabbed? Like, it's kind of bizarre.”
SPS said the school was put into a modified lockdown after the fight. No one was allowed inside the building, but school went on as normal. The modified lockdown was lifted later Thursday morning.
"It's just something that you don't expect to happen when you come to school," Perkins said.
SPS and the Spokane Police Department (SPD) both said they can't provide any further details about the stabbing at this time.
