SPOKANE, Wash. — Court documents are revealing new details about a deadly shooting on the South Hill this week. The man who reportedly shot and killed a man hiding in his mother's closet appeared in court Thursday facing a murder charge.
That Wednesday morning shooting happened inside an apartment complex on 55th Avenue. Court documents said 22-year-old suspect Cody Low told police he found a man he knew sleeping in his mother's closet.
Low is now charged with second-degree murder. According to court documents, Low was staying with his mom that night. She wasn't home, but he heard someone snoring in her bedroom closet.
Low grabbed a gun, opened the closet doors and found Willie Anderson sleeping inside. Low told police he's known Anderson for most of his life and that Anderson and his mom had been together in the past.
According to court documents, Low ordered Anderson out of the apartment. Low told police Anderson raised his hands quickly, and Low closed his eyes and pulled the trigger.
Anderson died a short time later. Low's mom told police she snuck Anderson into the apartment earlier that night through her bedroom window before she left. Apparently, she didn't tell her son he was there.
"Mr. Anderson had permission to be in that apartment, had permission to be with your mother," Court Commissioner Eugene Cruz said Thursday. "You had indicated that it was your intention to pull the trigger and you also indicated to officers that Mr. Anderson."
Low's grandmother spoke in court Thursday, pleading for his release, and saying the tragic incident was in self-defense. Prosecutors asked for bond to be set at $1 million. Cruz set bond at $100,000.
