Man who shot estranged wife in Spokane confessed to mother, documents say

Spokane Police Cpl. Teresa Fuller said the shooting suspect, identified as 35-year-old Donovan Gibson, is in custody. Gibson turned himself in on Wednesday morning.

SPOKANE, Wash. — A man who shot his estranged wife and her boyfriend called his mother and cousin after the shooting to confess to the crime and told them he was going to kill himself, documents said.

The woman, Sasha Gibson, is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Her boyfriend was found dead after the shooting near Chief Garry Park on Tuesday night, according to Spokane Police Cpl. Teresa Fuller.

KREM confirmed Sasha Gibson works at Gonzaga University as the Social Justice Outreach Coordinator of the Unity Multicultural Education Center.

The shooting happened on the 1700 block of North Stone Street, just west of Spokane Community College, Fuller said.

Fuller said the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Donovan Gibson, is in custody as of 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday. Donovan turned himself in near the Public Safety Building, according to Fuller.

Around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Spokane police patrol officers responded to a 911 call from Sasha who said her estranged husband was trying to break into her home and had been known to be armed in the past, Fuller said. Documents said the woman was heard screaming at Donovan to go away. Then, the 911 operator said the woman "sounded like she was in pain by the way she was breathing," documents said.

According to court documents, doctors believe Sasha was shot twice in the back of the head.

When officers arrived, they heard a woman screaming inside the home. Officers said in court documents that the front door to the home "appeared to be damaged and it appeared that somebody had kicked the door in."

Once officers were inside, documents said they found a man dead on the floor in the kitchen with a gunshot wound to the head. Sasha was found alive in a back bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head as well. Sasha was then taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Sasha told a detective that she was currently going through a divorce and she was living with her boyfriend at the home, documents said. She told them that earlier in the evening, she had gotten into an argument with her estranged husband, Gibson, on Facebook.

She said that the argument "ended with her husband...saying that he was going to kill himself," documents said.

Documents later show that Sasha was having "difficulty recalling everything."

She said Donovan showed up to her home after the argument, was trying to get into the house and the next thing she remembered "was that Donovan had gotten into the house and that Donovan was armed with a pistol," documents said.

Sasha said she ran to a bedroom and Donovan was trying to get in, documents show.

"She remembered hearing two gunshots and that the next thing she remembers is waking up to the police officers being inside the residence," documents said.

Detectives learned Donovan called his mom and his cousin and confessed that he shot his wife and her boyfriend, documents said.

When detectives spoke to Donovan's cousin, he told him "he was going to kill himself and that he wasn't going to go to prison," court documents said.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for Donovan's apartment in Cheney, documents showed.
