SPOKANE, Wash. — A man who was trafficking drugs and involved in a high-speed chase in Spokane four years ago was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern Washington District and court documents, the DEA learned that 46-year-old Juan Pablo Carrillo-Nava was drug trafficking in Eastern Washington.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said on August 13, 2020, investigators arranged a controlled purchase of methamphetamine from the organization Carrillo-Nava was working for.

Agents eventually found a green Honda that Carrillo-Nava previously used. The U.S. Attorney's Office said SPD was called to conduct a traffic stop in the area, where Carrillo-Nava sped off into a neighborhood, going as fast as 75 miles per hour in a 25-mile-per-hour zone.

Video from the U.S. Attorney's Office shows Carrillo-Nava crashing his car into an oncoming vehicle, hitting a chain link fence in the front yard of a Spokane home. Investigators secured a search warrant and found $28,200 in cash, around two pounds of heroin and over half a pound of methamphetamine.

Spokane Police and the DEA took Carrillo-Nava into custody. Carrillo-Nava was sentenced on one count of possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of actual (pure) methamphetamine.

Carrillo-Nava was sentenced to 70 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release.

“Drug trafficking presents a serious danger to families, neighborhoods, and residents in our community. Mr. Carrillo-Nava attempted to avoid arrest by recklessly speeding through neighborhoods, ignoring traffic signs, and disregarding posted speed limits. Even after crashing his vehicle, Mr. Carillo-Nava attempted to escape responsibility by running from police,” U.S. Attorney Vanessa Waldref said. “Working with our federal, state, local and tribal partners, we will continue to target large-scale drug trafficking organizations, hold their members accountable, and keep our communities safe and strong.”
