Man arrested in Spokane crime spree that included attempted kidnapping of nine-year-old girl, stealing car and eluding police

Police were able to track the suspect near 37th and Mount Vernon following the hour-and-a-half-long crime spree and took him into custody.

SPOKANE, Wash. — A man has been accused of a two-hour crime spree that included an attempted kidnapping of a nine-year-old girl, stealing a car and eluding police.

According to the Spokane Police Department and court documents, police responded to a reported carjacking at the Carl's Jr. on West 3rd Avenue, where a woman reported she was in the drive-thru when a man threw a rock into her car and hit her, demanding her to get out of her vehicle.

Officers were able to determine a description of the suspect, later finding the stolen vehicle on the South Hill near Southeast Boulevard and 17th Avenue.

Officers tried to follow the car, eventually ending their pursuit due to the driver's reckless driving.

According to SPD, someone told police about a suspicious vehicle that was found on East 28th Avenue near South Fiske Street. SPD said the car was confirmed to be stolen.

While K9 officers searched the car, police received a reported kidnapping at South Mount Vernon Street and East 31st Avenue.

Police and court documents say a man, who matched the description of the carjacking suspect, tried to kidnap a nine-year-old girl who was playing outside with a friend in the area.

SPD said they saw a man saw the suspect grab the girl and heard the girl yelling. The man who saw the suspect grab the girl was able to rescue the girl and chase off the suspect,

As police were talking to the girl and the man, police received another call from a woman who said she had scared a burglar out of her home on East 33rd Avenue near South Mount Vernon Street. SPD said the same carjacking and kidnapping suspect fled the home with a pillowcase of items he took.

Police say the suspect hit an officer in the head with a rake and lit a shed next to a home on fire on South Smith Street near East 35th Avenue.

Earlier in the day, SPD said the same suspect allegedly stole cash and jewelry from a business in North Spokane near North Crescent Avenue and Magnolia Avenue.

Police were able to track the suspect near 37th and Mount Vernon following the hour-and-a-half-long crime spree and took him into custody.

SPD said 38-year-old Daniel Pajas was booked into the Spokane County Jail and faces 13 charges, which include the following:
