Inmate death at Spokane County Jail now a homicide investigation

The inmate complained of trouble breathing and was unresponsive before medical assistance arrived. Witnesses said two inmates were fighting before one died.

Earlier this month, an inmate died at the Spokane County Jail. Now that death is a homicide investigation.

On August 9, a corrections officer responded to an emergency alert in a cell and found inmate Christopher N. Luman sitting on his bed. He complained of trouble breathing and was unresponsive before medical assistance arrived, according to court documents.

According to court documents, three inmates in Luman’s cell told detectives that Luman shared a bunk with Anthony John Weber. They said the two had a physical fight before the emergency alert was activated.

Five other inmates told detectives they did not witness a fight. Weber refused to provide a statement to investigators.

Witnesses said the fight was over quickly but Luman was bleeding. They said Luman and Weber cleaned themselves and Luman’s blood from the floor, and went back to their beds without further incident. Later, Luman requested someone activate the emergency alert because he was having trouble breathing.

Investigators will collect DNA samples and fingernail clippings from Weber.
