Police: No spike in reports after claims of women being drugged at the Globe

People on social media claimed women were being drugged at the Globe Bar and Kitchen on North Division Street.

SPOKANE, Wash. — A spokesperson for the Spokane Police Department said there has not been an increase in reports after allegations on social media that women are being drugged at the Globe Bar and Kitchen.

Sgt. Terry Preuninger said the department has received several reports of spiked drinks throughout the downtown area in the last month, which he said is typical.

"Unfortunately there are a lot of people who post on social media and don't reach out to us ... but it really limits our ability to do anything," Preuninger added.

He encouraged people to report any incidents at Spokane bars.

Preuninger added that officers with the department's Downtown Precinct and bar patrol officers constantly walk through bars every weekend, providing information about safety as they go.

“Most of the bars, at least on the surface, appear to be willing to work with us and have in-house rules that are supportive," Preuninger said.

Across the street from the Globe, someone posted a sign about the allegations of drugging, saying “This is not ok.”

Scott Wilburn, owner of the Globe, issued a statement on Monday evening responding to the allegations:

In light of recent events, we at The Globe Bar and Kitchen want to express how important our customers are to us. As a high-volume nightclub, our staff and security are committed to ensuring the safety of our patrons. There are individuals whom intend harm by means of drugging men and women’s drinks.

Recently, concerns have been expressed as to our establishment’s perceived reputation. The Globe Bar and Kitchen hosts the largest security team in town supported by seventeen HD security cameras. We understand this may not be enough. Drink tampering is and continues to be a problem in Spokane restaurant and bars. We view recent events as a call to action.

Our ownership and management team consists predominantly of females, gay men, and individuals committed to inclusivity. That our guests might feel unsafe is unacceptable. Starting now, we’re initiating new in-house policies to ensure patron safety and confidence.

If a customer suspects their drink has been tampered with, the drink will be remade, no questions asked. Additionally, security footage will immediately be reviewed to investigate foul play. In our nightclub hours, any unattended drinks will be disposed of in order to prevent tampering.

The Globe Bar and Kitchen will be looking into further training and courses for our staff. This problem is larger than The Globe. We are starting a local coalition of bars committed to taking the necessary steps to eradicate drink tampering. Our mission is to cultivate a safe and positive atmosphere throughout downtown Spokane.

Wilburn also said they will soon be offering lids for all drinks. They will also post messages around the bar giving advice on how to protect drinks.

Willburn has also scheduled meeting with other bar owners in the city to discuss actions they can all take to address these problems.

Preuninger reminded bar patrons to practice basic safety measures, including staying with a friend and never leaving your drink unattended.
