SPOKANE, Wash. — One man was arrested in downtown Spokane Monday evening after allegedly trying to flee the scene of a rollover crash
According to the Spokane Police Department (SPD), a man driving a stolen red Jeep was heading east bound on Main Ave towards Washington St when he ran a light and hit a white car. Two people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Jeep, identified as Joshua Devleming, is charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, hit and run and attempting to elude a police car.
At approximately 2 p.m. on Monday, Spokane police were called to an incident on West Pacific Avenue when an officer saw a red Jeep driving recklessly. Police said the car drove out of a parking lot and turned on Pacific Avenue, almost hitting another car.
The officer said he saw it drive south on Browne Street and cut through a gas station parking lot on the corner of Browne and Second Avenue. At that point, the officer turned on his lights and sirens, but the suspect, identified as Devleming, reportedly ignored him.
According to documents, Devleming was speeding west on Pacific Avenue, ignoring lights and sirens. He turned north on Washington Avenue without yielding to traffic and almost caused a crash. The officer said he stopped following the car after the near collision.
Later that day, the officer learned that the Jeep was involved in a crash at Washington and Main in downtown Spokane. According to SPD, the Jeep crashed into a white car, causing it to flip.
A passenger in the car was able to get out, but the driver was trapped and had to be extricated. Both were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover.
Police said Devleming ran away from the crash on foot but was later detained by two off-duty Pasco police officers. He was booked into the Spokane County Jail for charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving, hit and run and attempting to elude a police car.
Devleming has 15 prior misdemeanor convictions and ten adult felonies across three states. Records show he also has a previous hit and run conviction out of Washington state. He appeared in court for the first time on Tuesday, and a Spokane County judge set his bond at $20,000. He is set to appear in court again on June 4.
