SPOKANE The badly decomposed body found in Spokane Sunday has been Identified as Kala Williams. Police say they are investigating the case as a homicide.
Williams was reported missing in April. Loved ones of 20-year-old Kala Williams reported to police they haven't heard from her in more than three weeks.
Spokane Police stated that they had received a missing persons report from Kala Williams' boyfriend on April 2, 2012. On Wednesday police made a correction saying Kala's brother had reported her missing. He reported last seeing her near a home at 2300 West Broadway several weeks prior.
Authorities said children came across the decomposing body Sunday afternoon in a wooded area near 14th and Milton, just off Highway 195.
Officers quickly responded and set up a barricade around the body. Major Crimes Detectives and the Forensics Unit spent hours processing the scene.
Routinely, Investigators utilize a 'total station' mapping unit to record measurements of a scene. Obtaining a clear line of sight for these measurements was nearly impossible, due to the heavily wooded area.
Detectives received assistance from a member of the Spokane County 911 team, who was able to provide an enhanced GPS device, the IKE GPS 300. This device was able to obtain the necessary measurements needed for the investigation.
Once the evidence was collected, the body was removed by the Medical Examiner's Office.
Major Crimes Detectives were on scene all Monday, recovering evidence and processing the scene. The body was so badly decomposed; police originally couldn't identify the gender.
Several other high profile investigations, including the Sharlotte McGill murder case, have stretched the SPD extremely thin. Detectives from other parts of the department are assisting with these investigations.
