Man accused in deadly shooting at Spokane Valley Safeway appears in court

According to the affidavit of facts, Jonathan Bryman allegedly shot and killed William McCreight in a Spokane Valley Safeway parking lot, then drove off.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The man accused of a deadly shooting at a local grocery store last month faced a judge on Friday.

Detectives say they used the store's club card to track him down.

According to the affidavit of facts, witnesses said Jonathan Bryman allegedly shot a man multiple times at around 6 a.m. on October 12.

Bryman appeared in court for the first time on Friday before Court Commissioner Eugene Cruz. According to the affidavit of facts, Bryman allegedly shot and killed 53-year-old William McCreight in a Spokane Valley Safeway parking lot, then drove off.

Bryman was arrested two days later at a home in Hayden, Idaho, after police found probable cause to charge him with second-degree murder. Court documents said Bryman had two guns when he was arrested before being extradited back to Spokane County.

According to court documents, Spokane County Deputies later identified Bryman through a Safeway Club Card they say he used to buy something from the store before the shooting.

Bryman does have a criminal history, being convicted in Idaho for two counts of aggravated assault and one count of domestic battery in 2021.

According to initial information from Spokane County deputies, Bryman and McCreight met in the parking lot for what is believed to be a possible drug deal.

McCreight's family was at the hearing, and his son went before Cruz about the bond amount.

"I would just ask that the court uphold the $1 million bond due to the circumstances and obviously the loss of my father and the events that took place," McCreight's son said.

Bryman's bond was set for $1 million.

Bryman's arraignment will be November 19 at 9 a.m.
