SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Police say a deadly stabbing that happened over the weekend in downtown Spokane was all over a relationship.
Anthony Chastain is now being held on $500,000 bond. Chastain is accused of stabbing a man on West Third Avenue on Sunday.
Chastain is charged with the second-degree murder of Javier Chavez. Prosecutors and police said it happened during a fight over a girlfriend, which happened outside the old Hope House in downtown Spokane.
Court records show witnesses saw Chastain arrive there, then the two men got into a fight. Chastain stayed at the scene after police say he stabbed Chavez in the chest, telling officers that he was protecting himself after two men attacked him.
Prosecutors and police said that's not what the evidence showed.
“This sounds like this was an ongoing beef between Mr. Chastain and Mr. Chavez over a female and that Mr. Chastain got in his vehicle [and] armed himself with a knife,” the prosecutor said.
Investigators were also able to find surveillance video they say showed Chastain stabbed Chavez quickly into the fight, and it didn't match the "attack" he described.
