LYNNWOOD, Wash. — The 16-year-old Edmonds boy charged with shooting and killing 13-year-old Jayda Woods-Johnson in the Alderwood Mall food court was re-arrested after being charged as an adult.

Samuel L. Gizaw was taken into custody the night of July 9 and is being held on $2 million bail. He was charged for first- and second-degree murder, assault and a juvenile in possession of a firearm.

Gizaw pleaded not guilty to the charges.

An omnibus hearing is scheduled for Aug. 23 and a tentative trial date for Gizaw is set for Sept. 6.

On the evening of July 3, Gizaw got into a dispute with a group of teenage boys, one of whom is believed to have punched Gizaw, according to a statement of probable cause. In response, Gizaw allegedly pulled out a gun and gave chase when the group of boys ran.

Gizaw allegedly shot at the boy who punched him. The bullet struck Woods-Johnson, who was in the mall with a friend.

Gizaw turned himself in that night and was taken into custody.

Bail was set at $50,000 cash only and $500,000 bondable. Gizaw bonded out.

Woods-Johnson's family spoke out, saying they were "extremely disappointed" the suspect was out on bail.

In a filing of charges, prosecutors argue the initial bail determination was made on a holiday and the state was not present, nor did the state make a bail request.

The state requested an arrest warrant so state prosecutors could have input on the bail amount before the previous order expired. Because Gizaw posted bond, conditions of his release previously set would have expired at the end of July 9, according to charging documents.
