SPOKANE, Wash. — Winter weather has made its way to Spokane this week and is expected to continue through the weekend, bringing snow totals up for the 2018 season.
But how does this year's snowfall so far shape up compared to past years?
Factoring in the snow on early Tuesday morning, snow totals since Dec. 1 have accumulated to 4.6 inches. However, at this time in December of last year, no measurable snowfall had been recorded. At this time last year, snow had only been recorded in early November, bringing the seasonal total to 7.2 inches. This ties the amount of snow that Spokane has seen so far this 2018 season.
Comparing last year and this year to seasonal averages, Spokane continues to see below average snowfall. We would normally expect 11.7 inches of snow by this time in the season. Both last year and this year's amount of 7.2 inches keeps us below average. Forecasts show that snow on Tuesday will bring many of these amounts up.
Overall, that means seasonal totals in Spokane are sitting close to where they were by this time last year but below the seasonal average. More snow and rain is expected to increase these numbers this week, but it would take an additional 4.5 inches for Spokane to even tie the seasonal average.
