Medical Lake mayor suspends fireworks for the remainder of 2024

Folks in Medical Lake will have to rethink their Independence Day plans.

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. — The mayor of Medical Lake, Terri Cooper, ordered a firework suspension for the remainder of the 2024 year, effective immediately.

During a council meeting on June 4, Medical Lake City Council supported the mayor's decision for a temporary suspension of the sale, use, and discharge of fireworks within city limits.

The decision was made to protect the community's public health and safety.

The suspension of fireworks was made in remembrance of the Gray Road Fire that took place on August 18, 2023. Medical Lake residents are still in shock after the 11,000 acres that were destroyed. A total loss of 240 homes and over 100 other structures were impacted. Thousands of residents are still actively affected by the aftermath of the fire.

With Independence Day coming next month, The City recognizes that this suspension will disrupt some Independence Day plans, but they are hoping that having the order in place now will give the people of Medical Lake time to make new arrangements for the Holiday.
