SPOKANE, Wash. — Hoopfest brings out a lot of people's creativity when it comes to picking a team name.
While a few teams have names that represent a place they all work or a sponsor, most teams choose a creative or catchy name that separates them from the rest of the pack.
Usually, your team name is unique and belongs to you only. But this year, two teams came up with names just one letter off.
This year, Hoopfest saw a 'Bobby and the Boyz' and a 'Bobby and the Boys.'
Derek Selvig plays for Bobby and the Boyz, with a 'z', and said they had it first.
"I think we had it first," he said.
Selvig and his team were successful as well, finishing second in their division, losing to champions Lee and Hayes. But this year, they are going 'Bobby-less."
"We had a Bobby on our team. He couldn't come out and play this year, unfortunately, but yeah, we've been 'Bobby and the Boyz' for four or five years," Selvig said.
This year, a new 'Bobby and the Boys' appeared, this time spelled correctly with an 's.' Bobby Moorehead, who inspired the team name, said it was spontaneous.
"I didn't know we were going to be Bobby and the Boys until we got here, so it's just kind of random," Moorehead said.
Moorehead was a last second addition to the roster, filling in for a friend, so they changed the name to fit their new player.
"They're usually called 'Mama's Boys.' They usually play with four brothers, but one of their brothers was hurt this year, so I stepped in," Moorehead said. "I guess I wouldn't be their other child, so I guess they had to change it up somehow."
An even bigger twist in the story; Selvig and Moorehead know each other.
"I was like, 'What's going on? I don't get it, I don't know how there can be two'," Selvig said.
Selvig likes the fact that they were the first to use the name, and that they had a little extra flair.
"We got a 'Z', they got the 'S'," Selvig said.
But Moorehead takes solace in the fact that his team had the better showing, going further in this year's bracket.
"I always say we are. I always say me team's the best, so I got to rep that," Moorehead said.
