Spokane taxpayers qualify for extension, deadline extended to June 17 due to 2023 wildfires

According to the IRS, taxpayers impacted by the Gray and Oregon Road wildfires have until June 17, 2024 to file their federal tax returns and make tax payments.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) confirmed that residents of Spokane and Whitman Counties people and businesses qualify for tax relief due to the Gray and Oregon Road wildfires in August 2023.

According to the IRS, those taxpayers have until June 17, 2024 to file their federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. The June 17 deadline also applies to those who had an extension to file their 2022 returns. However, the IRS said tax-year 2022 tax payments are not eligible for this relief since they were originally due before the wildfires occurred.

When asked about how the delays work for those impacted by wildfires, Chief Tax Information Officer for Jackson-Hewitt, Mark Steber said, "The IRS generally looks at the zip code for the actual tax filer, whether it's a business or an individual. That's kind of how they include you in the affected zone or not."

Steber added that filers can go to IRS.gov or FEMA.gov to see if your zip code is included in the disaster declaration areas. Those who are included are afforded a whole host of automatic extensions of time to file, time to pay, and even some other great tax options about carrying any losses that you have backwards and getting some of your prior tax money back.

The June 17, 2024 deadline applies to the following, according to the IRS:

  • Individual income tax returns and payments normally due on April 15, 2024.
  • 2023 contributions to IRAs and health savings accounts for eligible taxpayers.
  • 2023 quarterly estimated income tax payments normally due on Sept. 15, 2023, and Jan. 16, 2024, and 2024 estimated tax payments normally due on April 15, 2024.
  • Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns normally due on Oct. 31, 2023, and Jan. 31 and April 30, 2024.
  • Calendar-year partnership and S corporation returns normally due on March 15, 2024.
  • Calendar-year corporation and fiduciary returns and payments normally due on April 15, 2024.
  • Calendar-year tax-exempt organization returns normally due on May 15, 2024.

The IRS is also urging anyone who needs an additional tax-filing extension beyond June 17 for their 2023 income tax return to request it electronically by April 15.
