SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — The city of Spokane Valley was awarded more than $5 million in federal grants for road preservation.
The National Highway Performance Program (NHPP) gave the city of Spokane Valley two grants totaling $5.3 million. The city received nearly $4 million for the South Sullivan Road Preservation Project, and another $1.4 million for the Sprague Avenue Preservation Project. Both projects are set to begin next year.
According to the city, the South Sullivan Preservation Project will receive $3.96 million from the NHPP grant, 89% of the total project cost. The project will consist of replacing asphalt, expanding the city's traffic signal communication network, adding sidewalks, improving the stormwater treatment system and evaluating pedestrian crossing near East 12th Avenue.
The project limits are between East 8th and 24th Avenues. Construction is set to start in 2025.
The Sprague Avenue Preservation Project will receive $1.35 million from the NHPP grant and an additional $1.5 million federal grant from the Spokane Regional Transportation Block Grant program. These two grants will cover more than 92% of the total project cost, according to the city.
This project will replace six lanes with failing asphalt between Bowdish and McDonald Roads. It will also upgrade the sidewalks to ensure they meet accessibility requirements and maintain the current asphalt in the center turn lane. Construction is set to start in 2025.
