MOSCOW, Idaho — Highway 8 and U.S. 95 come together in Moscow, Idaho, and have been a part of Moscow's history for the past 200 years. The area is seen by many as a traffic headache. Now, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is looking to ease congestion through a project they hope will be ready by 2050.
T. Jay Clevenger's bike shop is right on U.S. 95. He said the road brings business to his shop.
"If you've been to Moscow, Idaho, you've been to Paradise Creek Bicycles. You've been to Highway 95, 513," Clevenger said. "People when they're driving up, they stop here for lunch. They say it's the heart of the arts. They say it's a curious little town."
As a business owner, Clevenger says U.S. 95 brings in customers. But, some drivers claim the road is a mess. Particularly at the Highway 8 and U.S. 95 intersection. ITD wants to fix the problem, and they're asking Moscow residents what they think.
Moscow Mayor Art Bettge has ideas, like a bypass. He wants ITD to re-route U.S. 95 altogether.
"Your average chip truck between Plummer and Lewistonis is not stopping," Bettge said. "They're not interested."
Community leaders in towns all around the Palouse are helping ITD through this process. They are planning on having their next community meeting this spring.
Whatever the ITD decides on, Moscow won't see it for decades.
