SPOKANE, Wash. — A new storage facility concept is in the works in Spokane. Garage Lodge will be a facility designed for people who need warehouse space, where individuals will buy space instead of renting it.
Chris Bornhoft is transforming an empty plot of land on the border of Spokane and Airway Heights into a new facility. The concept started when the state took over the land that housed Bornhoft's warehouse under eminent domain to build the North-South Freeway.
"We had to find a home for all of our stuff," Bornhoft said. "We decided instead of building just one warehouse, maybe we should build two or three."
The idea continued expanding. Now, Bornhoft is developing a warehouse community with 23 garages. The concept is different than a typical storage facility because instead of renting the space, individuals own the space. Plus, each unit will be equipped with gas and electricity.
"Then you can customize it on the inside however you want. We'll have 18-foot-high side walls, you can put in a mezzanine," Bornhoft said.
Spokanites are already interested in the concept, with 18 of the 23 units already reserved.
Some people are getting creative with how they are going to use the space. Bornhoft says there are people planning on using the garages for offices, racing, movie production and general contractors.
Bornhoft is waiting on final permit approval from the City of Spokane. He hopes to break ground soon, and open Garage Lodge by spring 2023.
