Where can you find WSU's Cosmic Crisp apple in Spokane?

The apple is lauded for its ability to stay juicy and flavorful through months of storage. It hit shelves in Spokane on Monday.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Cosmic Crisp has finally come to life and hit the produce shelves of grocery stores in Spokane.

The apple is a hybrid mix of the Honeycrisp and Enterprise apples and has been in the works for over 20 years now at the Washington State University Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center in Wenatchee.

Monday was the first day for the Cosmic Crisp at the Rosauers on South Hill and it was a big deal. Located next to the freshly displayed apples were an abundance of samples that customers could taste.

“I’m making apple crisp for my book club,” one shopper exclaimed.

The apples have been sampled before but this is the first time they're being distributed in mass. The juice-filled fruit takes five to seven years before the tree it grows on can produce the apple.

Right now, the apples can be purchased for $2.99 a pound.

The new apple is also known for being able to stay crisp and flavorful even after months in storage.
