Walmart eliminates plastic bags in Washington state

Starting today, Walmart customers in Washington no longer have the option to purchase plastic bags at checkout.

WASHINGTON, USA — Walmart customers in Washington will see a change at checkout. As of Tuesday, April 18, the company has removed plastic carryout bags from all stores in the state.

The change means that customers will need to bring their own bags into the store. Walmart will also offer reusable bags and containers for purchase. The change will also affect pickup customers, though Walmart said it will use paper bags for delivery orders.

Washington already has a single-use plastic bag ban in place. That law allows businesses to charge 8 cents for paper carryout bags or thick reusable plastic carryout bags. Fees are optional for compostable bags.

"Eliminating single-use bags is part of our effort to reduce waste at our stores and help keep Washington communities and ecosystems clean," Jane Ewing, senior vice president of Walmart Sustainability said.

Washington isn't the first state where Walmart has gone bagless. The company already made the change at stores in Vermont, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Colorado, and Connecticut, along with Canada and Mexico.
