SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Refillery opened in downtown Spokane in early 2022, becoming the first storefront of its kind in the city.
The Refillery allows customers to use multi-use containers to refill personal care items and natural cleaning products, in order to promote less waste.
Refilleries have gained popularity in other larger cities. The concept was created as a sustainable way for customers to purchase items while encouraging zero-waste habits. Spokane Refillery owner Hannah Nelson said customers can fill up on most personal care or natural cleaning products, including laundry detergent, cleaners, hair-care products, and more.
Nelson hopes the new local shop encourages Spokane residents to shop locally for items people typically buy online or at big box stores. She said the quality of her products is better for the environment as well.
The process to buy a product is simple: bring a container or pull a container from the community jar shelf, tare the weight of the jar, fill the jar with the desired product, weigh out and pay.
The store is open during the following limited hours:
- Wednesday-Friday: 12:30-5pm
- Saturday: 10am-4pm
- Sundays: Certain pre-determined days
Nelson also collects used jars from the community. Anyone can bring her old jars; she cleans and sanitizes them to be placed on the community jar shelf.
