Renovations on south suspension pedestrian bridge at Riverfront Park begin today

The renovations will continue through the rest of 2023, with the bridge re-opening to the public in 2024.

SPOKANE, Wash. — One of the pedestrian bridges at Riverfront Park is getting a facelift.

The south suspension pedestrian bridge at Riverfront Park will be undergoing renovations starting May 8, 2023. The renovations will continue through the rest of 2023, with the bridge re-opening to the public in the spring of 2024.

Some of the expected updates include a new deck, replacing corroded beams, repairing lighting, and more.

The Riverfront Park north suspension bridge will be closed temporarily to help with construction on the south suspension bridge. Alternate detours will be marked along the Howard Street Promenade through the center of the park.

The north suspension bridge underwent renovations in 2021 and 2022, the south suspension bridge at Riverfront Park will now go through similar renovations.

According to the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department, the total budget for the project is $2.8 million. Included in the budget is the design, engineering, and construction management.

“The north and south suspension bridges were built for Expo ‘74, and as we near the 50th anniversary of Expo, it’s reassuring to know these two bridges, that offer some of the best view of our river falls, will be here for another 50 years,” Parks and Rec Director Garrett Jones said.

The bridge is expected to reopen in Spring 2024.
