Spokane Valley Council City awards $2 million fund toward Avista Stadium renovations

The funds come from Spokane Valley city's lodging tax fund.

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Spokane Valley City Council unanimously approved $2 million for Spokane Indians Avista Stadium renovations during a council meeting on Tuesday night.

Spokane Valley will get the funds from its lodging tax fund. Washington state law states that local governments have to spend lodging tax dollars from 2% of hotel rooms tax, to help benefit the tourism industry.

In 2003, Spokane City Council approved sensing a revised award to the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC) for review and comment for the Avista Stadium award fund.

In October of last year, one application requesting more than $3.25 million was received from Spokane County in conjunction with Spokane Indians to modernize Avista Stadium. The proposal was for using the funding over a period of three years. The LTAC's recommendation for that approval was to award the project $2 million over three years.

Spokane County Chief Executive Officer, Scott Simmons requested that if the ultimate award for the proposal was less than the requested $3.25 million, the council make available the $2 million award in 2023 rather than spread out over the three years period as it was proposed in the county's application.

One month later the city approved a $2 million award that will be available this year rather than over three years.

The money aims to help Avista Stadium needed upgrades which include the following proposed improvement projects for 2023:

  • Remodeling and addition of a home clubhouse
  • Relocation of Avista Stadium maintenance building
  • New batting cage
  • Pitching tunnel and workout building
  • Outfield wall
  • Legends lookout improvements
  • Stadium structural condition assessment
