SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane celebrated Pride with a full day of festivities on Saturday.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, a 1969 police raid at the Stonewall Inn in New York.
The riots were a turning point for the gay rights movement and, the following year, Chicago and New York held parades commemorating the anniversary of the riots.
2019 marks the 28th year of Pride in Spokane, with this year’s theme named, “To Thrive, Not Just Survive."
Spokane joined cities across the U.S. hosting parades and other celebrations this weekend in honor of Pride Month.
Pride app
Spokane has a Pride app this year to act as a safety resource, help people follow the parade route and learn more about activities surrounding.
The app will welcome users to Pride as soon as they enter the area where it takes place.
‘It Gets Better’ Project and Lime
Lime and the “It Gets Better Project” are also partnering to spread a message across social media during Pride Month.
They are asking members of the LGBTQ community to take a self-portrait and share a handwritten note of their Pride story on social media using #UnlockPride.
Photos can be uploaded to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram throughout the month.
Lime will donate one dollar to the “It Gets Better Project” for every story shared on social media.
