SPOKANE, Wash. — It was the night of Halloween on Spokane’s South Hill. Neighborhoods were filled with children wearing army costumes and those mimicking dogs and cats.
And for some trick-or-treaters on their hunt for candy, they might have been transported to the Land of Oz.
"I like getting candy and I like wearing my costume,” trick or treater Ace Lazarte said.
"We brought a big bag so we would be ready, North Ziegler said.
"Every year, we like to do something for the community. And we get more and more people coming every year,” maze organizer Suzanne Peregoy said.
Peregoy first started the tradition of Halloween adventure mazes eight years ago. Each year, she and her team of volunteers decorate the maze in a new theme. This Halloween, trick-or-treaters got to walk from Kansas to Munchkin Land.
"It's wonderful to see the really little teeny tiny ones that just come up and give you a hug and give you the squige. I mean, it's a holiday tradition, and we never miss it," Peregoy said.
More than 1,000 trick or treaters come through the maze each year. And it isn't just for the fun.
"We love getting as much canned food and donation as we can for second harvest. When you raise two tons of food, it's it's really quite a big deal,” Peregoy said.
For admission into the maze, Peregoy asks people to bring canned and non-perishable foods. People can also donate money to second harvest.
"The more we can raise for that, the more people that can eat,” volunteer Mace Fallenbird said.
This is Fallenbird’s second Halloween volunteering. He knows the importance of events like this.
"I've been in that position so many times where I've gone to a food bank and I just needed something to make it," Fallenbird said.
Peregoy said her team of volunteers don't plan on stopping anytime soon. They already have next year’s maze theme planned which has yet to be revealed.
