SPOKANE, Wash. — Whether it’s Halloween, Christmas, Easter or Valentine’s Day, Americans across the board also significantly increase their spending on candy during the holidays, according to research published by Statista.

With an increase of almost 50% during the eight weeks leading up to October 31, Halloween typically sparks the biggest seasonal chocolate sales increase. A study by Innerbody Research says that during this year’s Halloween season, Americans are predicted to spend 3.1 billion dollars on candy.

Innerbody Research released a study based on Google Trends to determine the favorite candies within 24 popular brands across the United States.

Innerbody reports that Charms Blow Pops and Jolly Ranchers were tied for the most popular candy in most states. In second place was Starburst and Kit Kat rounded out the podium in third place.

Washington state, along with Massachusetts, Virginia, Wisconsin, Ohio and Nebraska, reportedly call Starburst their favorite candy.

Idaho stands alone with its reported favorite: Swedish Fish.

Charms Blow Pops was heavily favored in southern states, including North and South Carolina, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida and Missouri.

Jolly Ranchers tied for first and was searched for the most in Colorado, the District of Columbia, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland and Oklahoma.

Innerbody says overall it seems that fruit-flavored candies are most popular in the South and Midwest while chocolate is more popular in colder states like Alaska, Vermont and New Hampshire.

However, Hawaii also showed an affinity for chocolate, with Almond Joy at the top of their trend.
