Spokane Christmas Light Show celebrates 20 years of cheer

What’s become a holiday tradition for many is the very definition of a labor of love.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Christmas Light Show is brightening up a home in the Glenrose area for its 20th year. It's transformed into a full 20-minute light show for the holidays.

What’s become a holiday tradition for many is the very definition of a labor of love. Gary Kuhn is the man behind the lights.

“When you see the families and kids and everything else, it’s inspiriting to keep on going," Kuhn said.

At the Kuhn Christmas Farm, you’ll find more than just Christmas trees, snowflakes, and dancing ginger breadmen.

"When I started doing the show and put the pig in it, I thought, I’m going all farm animals,” Kuhn said.

The pigs don’t fly here, but they do race over the barn. Porky the Pig sings his version of Christmas carols. Dancing next to him are Foghorn Leghorn and Dominick the Christmas donkey. These three are the original act.

"Over the years we’ve made a lot, but these three have stuck,” Kuhn said.

He's spent the last 20 years making each display by hand. When he built the the farm animals, Kuhn used a blown-up image of them to form their life-size shape.

“You use rolled cold steel, and start bending it to the shape that you want,” Kuhn said. “The farm animals are pretty simple. And the first trees I had were just rope light."

He also welded together the large Christmas trees. Even the snowflakes on the barn are made from white hangers zip tied together.

The transformation of the Kuhn Christmas farm starts in mid-October, with help from a friend.

"We try to get them up right around Halloween," Kuhn said. "If fact, we had them up by Halloween this year. We could have done a Halloween show."

Once the lights are successfully programed, the shows run every night for the holidays from 4:30p-10p. There are two different shows and they alternate each day. The lights are also linked to music. Just pull your car up to the fence, tune your radio to 99.7 FM and enjoy!

As cars pack in fighting for the best view, the show goes on for now.

"The family and everyone on my Facebook page tell me no, I can't quit," Kuhn said.

Make sure to swing by before the show goes dark.

You can find the "Spokane Christmas Light show" at 3107 South Glenrose Road in Spokane. Visit the Facebook page for more information.
