Spokane County breaks ground on new Camas Meadow Community Park in west Spokane County

A 10-acre lot is going to be home to the new Camas Meadow Community Park. This will be the first community park in the West Plains area.

CHENEY, Wash. — Old farmland is getting a makeover.

Spokane County broke ground on a new community park.

A 10-acre lot is going to be home to the new Camas Meadow Community Park. This will be the first community park in the West Plains area.

Located off I-90's Medical Lake exit on West Melville Road, the park is meant to serve the growing populations in the Medical Lake, Cheney and Airway Heights communities.

Families were able to give their direct input on what they wanted out of the project.

"This is a culmination of that effort of the community voices that were a part of those meetings," Julia Culp, Spokane County Parks Project Manager Landscape Architect said.

Amenities will include a public plaza, playground, an off-leash dog park, a perimeter trail, a baseball field and turf fields for soccer, giving the kids in the area room to play.

"I know my granddaughter, who’s a seventh grader, is very excited to have the park here," Jackie Randall, a member of the Cheney Parks Board and a lifetime Cheney resident, said. "She is a very active child. She said I can ride my bike here, and her friends can come here.”

The project was made possible by a $6 million grant from the American Rescue Plan Act.

Commissioner Al French said this has been a 10-year project. Now, neighbors and communities of the area can expect the park to be open next fall.
